CROWN POINT | Leave the cameras, sleeping bags and lawn chairs at home, folks.
Johnny Depp has left Crown Point.
After three days of filming the Michael Mann-directed movie "Public Enemies" in Crown Point, the crew and its star, Johnny Depp, packed up and drove the fleet of trucks and trailers out of town around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Crown Point police.
The movie depicts the life of notorious gangster John Dillinger, played by Depp. Scenes depicting Dillinger's time in Crown Point, including his escape from the old Lake County jail, were filmed here this week.
The film crew rolled into town early Monday morning, setting up trucks and trailers just south of the square with filming taking place at the Hall of Justice and the old jail building next door. Fans began flocking to the square with the arrival of the trucks.
Several students on spring break camped out in biting winds starting in the wee hours of the morning. Others stopped by for an hour or so after work, hoping to catch a glimpse of Depp.
They were not disappointed. Onlookers often got waves from the film star as he moved to and from the set and his trailer.
But the happiest fans -- who were kept behind an orange snow fence on Main Street in front of the Carnegie Center for most of the shoot -- were treated to handshakes, hellos and photos from the three-time Academy Award nominee when filming wrapped up for the day late Monday and Tuesday nights.
More Chicago-area filming is scheduled to begin April 5 in Aurora, Ill.
