Times Staff Report

The Dyer woman who smashed her children's heads with a barbell in July 2005 lost her appeal to a 110-year prison sentence Tuesday, according to a release from the Lake County prosecutor's office.

The Indiana Court of Appeals upheld two 55-year sentences for Magdalena Lopez, 32, who bludgeoned sons Erik Lopez, 2, and Anthony Lopez, 9.

Magdalena Lopez pleaded guilty but mentally ill, and Judge Diane Ross Boswell sentenced Lopez in August 2006. The emotional sentencing hearing included testimony on Lopez's bipolar disorder.

Magdalena Lopez called Dyer police July 19, 2005, to her house at 1029 Cambridge Lane. Officers found her drenched in blood on her front porch. The boys were dead in the house.
