STEPPIN' CLASS | Merrillville
Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a Chicago-style Steppin' Dance class at the Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. The six-week program meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays beginning March 10. Chicago style steppin' is an urban- style ballroom dancing with intricate spins and turns to an eight-beat count. Wear leather-soled shoes to class. Cost is $45 for individual residents and $80 for couples, and $50 for individual nonresidents and $90 for couples.

PAINS IN THE VEINS | Hobart
Family Practitioner Luis Barajas, M.D. will give an overview on varicose veins and explain treatment options at 6 p.m. March 11 in the auditorium of St. Mary Medical Center. Use the west tower entrance. Light refreshments will be served. Call to register for this free educational program.

HEALTHY KIDS DAY | Hobart
Hobart Family YMCA will host the 17th annual free YMCA Healthy Kids Day from 10 a.m. to noon March 15 at the YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. An opportunity for kids and families to "Put Play in Their Day," this special event uses free, fun, engaging and creative activities to encourage children and families to adopt behaviors that support a healthy lifestyle.
Attractions include the family walk, children's obstacle coarse, kids games, kids fitness classes, Tae Kwon Do demonstrations, the fun jump house, face painting, open swim time, teeth maintenance, head lice awareness, the glow germ machine, and healthy snack tips. Hobart and Merrillville's fire departments will be there and have a simulation fire drill. The Hobart Kiwanis Club and Hobart Police Department will provide Kid- identification cards and finger printing. Several costume characters will greet the boys and girls. Health screenings for adults will include blood pressure, glucose tests, hearing exams, eye tests and chiropractic screens as well as spinal massages. Registration for fall 2008 Developmental Preschool classes will take place at the event.

GET A GRANT | Jasper, Newton counties
Jasper Foundation, Inc. and the Newton County Community Foundation wish to announce two rounds of grants for this year from their undesignated fund. Grant applications for the first round are available for Jasper County and Newton County nonprofit groups and are due by April 1. Areas of interest include education, arts and culture, social services, health and historic preservation. Applications may be obtained at www.jasperfdn.org. Interested groups should contact Linda Reiners at the foundation office regarding their potential grant.

Essential Tremor Support Group meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 12 at Community Hospital Fitness Pointe, 9950 Calumet Ave. It's an open meeting. Attendees will meet new members and discuss essential tremor, a neurologic condition in which patients exhibit a rhythmic tremor of the hands, head, legs and/or voice.

St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers Auxiliary hosts The Book People USA from Scholastic Books. A variety of book titles will be offered for the entire family. Gift items also will be available. Discounts of up to 70 percent off retail prices will be available, and free raffles are planned. Proceeds benefit patients at the hospital. Gary Health Department, with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (serving Hoosier Healthwise), will sponsor a free lead and blood pressure screening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 15 at the Village Shopping Center, 3596 Village Court (Grant St.) Health information and free home lead testing kits will be available. Dora the Explorer will visit with children from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Instruction and practice in Infant CPR and obstructed airway care for newborns to 1-year-olds is offered March 13 at St. Anthony Medical Center. Class size is limited due to American Heart Association guidelines. Fee is $10 per person. Call for class times.

TRY YOGA | Merrillville
Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department offers a new Evening Yoga class from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning March 25 at the Pruzin Center, 5750 Tyler St. This class is for beginners and experience yoga students. Yoga can improve many health conditions, including obesity, nervousness, anxiety, fatigue, mental clarity and circulation. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for nonresidents for six weekly sessions. Register by March 18 and receive a free one-day pass to Curves.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING | Hobart
Lifeguard training classes will be held March 22 to April 12 at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Prerequisite testing must be successfully completed in advance by appointment only. Candidates will be taught the skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive two American Red Cross certifications, one for Lifeguard Training and First Aid valid for three years and another for CPR for the Professional Rescuer valid for one year.

DISEASES OF THE EYE | Wheatfield
"How To Live Successfully with Low Vision" will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon March 19 at the Wheatfield Library, 350 S. Bierma St. Verne Sandford, a professor emeritus of mathematics at Valparaiso University who has been legally blind for 66 years, will share his extensive research of diseases of the eye that result in low vision and explain two support groups in Valparaiso that he leads. Refreshments will be served, and registration is preferred so enough copies of handouts are available.
