LYNWOOD | Lynwood Police Officer Kelly Johnson and her three children lost everything in a suspected arson fire that engulfed the family's Dyer home Saturday.

The Lynwood Fraternal Order of Police said Wednesday it is accepting donations through the First National Bank of Illinois to help the family. Johnson is a six-year member of the department, officials said.

And Lake County police said they also are opening an Indiana-based fund to aid Johnson's family and later will combine the money with the Lynwood FOP's fundraising efforts. Details of that account were not available Wednesday.

Christopher Costello, 23, was charged Tuesday with three felony counts of attempted murder and one felony count of arson in connection with the fire at Johnson's home in the 9200 block of Sheffield Avenue, Lake Criminal Court records state.

The suspect, also of Dyer, said he picked the police officer's home because he didn't like cops and had seen a police car parked in that driveway, Lake County police said.

Five dogs and a kitten died in the fire, and Johnson's three children, ages 11, 14 and 17, were released from St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers in Dyer after treatment for burns, smoke inhalation and abrasions, Lake County Police Chief Marco Kuyachich said Tuesday.

The family's home was boarded up Wednesday, with charred siding and burned items sitting at the side of the home. All of the Johnson family's Christmas gifts were destroyed, Lake County police said.

Costello was arrested and was being held at Lake County Jail on Tuesday on a $200,000 bond, court records state.
