PORTAGE | Bill Swets and Jeremy Himan knew the call they answered the morning of Feb. 25 could have had disastrous results.

Two people were unconscious, possibly from high levels of carbon monoxide.

On the way to the Diane Street home, the two suited up, complete with airpacks. Within 4-1/2 minutes, they had the couple -- both of whom were semi-conscious -- out of the home and into the hands of paramedics.

The carbon monoxide level at the door was 344 parts per million. The average home has a level between one and 30 ppm.

The couple was admitted to the hospital and were released the next day.

"That was extremely fast," Lt. Tim Sosby said. Sosby submitted their names for the commendations, adding in the case of carbon monoxide, quick action can made all the difference.

Swets and Himan took the recognition in stride.

"Its nice to be recognized when you do a good job, but we were just doing our job," said Swets, a 12-year department member. Himan has been on the department for five years.

Both also said the incident should be a reminder to homeowners to install carbon monoxide detectors.

Fire Chief Bill Lundy called their actions "above and beyond their normal duties." He lauded the two for their dedication and professionalism and setting the proper example to other firefighters.
