MERRILLVILLE | One person was killed and four others were wounded when someone started shooting during a party at the Country Inn & Suites, 8311 Ohio St., early Saturday morning, Merrillville police said.

John Boyd, 20, of 737 Mississippi St., Gary, was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus at 8:26 a.m. Saturday, according to the Lake County coroner's office. He died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Merrillville police have a person of interest in the case but had not made an arrest as of late Saturday afternoon, Police Chief Joseph Petruch said.

The shooting took place about 1 a.m. Three males and one female were wounded, according to police. They were taken to Methodist Southlake in Merrillville, St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart and St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point.

The names of those taken to the hospitals were not released by police.

The party was attended by young people, many between the ages of 18 and 20, from Hammond, Gary and Merrillville, police said.
