MERRILLVILLE | Residents should be able to see some noticeable improvements to the Merrillville/Ross Township Veterans Memorial site by the end of the month.
Merrillville Public Works Director Bruce Spires said a concrete company has been pouring the curbs at the memorial on 73rd Avenue just east of Broadway.
Once that is finished, workers will complete some landscaping behind the curbs and start paving a parking lot for visitors, Spires said.
"We're getting there," he said. After paving the parking lot, more landscaping will need to be done in the back of the memorial site, Spires said.
Councilman Richard Hardaway, who serves as chairman of Merrillville's Veterans Memorial Committee, said the memorial is still on target to be dedicated on Labor Day even though weather caused some delays.
The memorial, which includes a statue commemorating all branches of the U.S. military, has been funded through donations, Hardaway said.
The committee might not be able to include as many features as it would like since donations have declined over the years.
Hardaway hopes the upcoming dedication will spark more interest in the memorial.
