Cal City sets May 30 deadline for buying vehicle decals
The city clerk is setting up shop temporarily around the city to help residents buy their vehicle city stickers.
Residents also can stop by to register to vote, buy an animal license or learn about other city services.
The stickers also are on sale at the clerk's office and online at www.calumetcity.org.
The deadline for buying vehicle stickers is May 30. Beginning June 1, a $100 late fee plus the cost of the sticker will be charged. Residents also could face a $50 fine if police ticket them for missing stickers.
The cost of a sticker for cars and motorcycles is $50. The price for trucks depends on the vehicle's weight.
Staff from the clerk's office will sell stickers at the these locations:
-- The Park of River Oaks Condos and River Oaks Townhouse and Co-op Park Clubhouse, 150 Park Ave., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
-- River Oaks Mobile Estates, 2025 Dolton Ave., from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
-- American Legion Post No. 330, 950 Legion Drive, from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Residents sought for 7th Ward committee
Seventh Ward Alderman Cindi Pallick is forming a ward committee for residents to discuss their ideas and concerns starting this spring, and is looking for residents to join.
Pallick plans to host the meetings at local businesses and restaurants at her expense.

City council recognizes TF North men's basketball team
The Calumet City Council passed a resolution commending Thornton Fractional North men's basketball team for winning the sectional championship and having the best season in school history during a city council meeting last week. Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush congratulated each player.
Thornton Fractional North Principal Dwayne Evans thanked the council and praised the team.
"These young men really worked hard and deserve this," he said.
SOUTH HOLLAND
Parent group to discuss kids with special needs
Thornton Township's youth committee is offering a support group for parents of children with special needs.
This group will meet from 3 to 4:14 p.m. Wednesdays at the Thornton Township Hall, 333 E. 162nd St. in South Holland.
The group is designed for parents to come together and interact with other parents who share some of the same struggles in raising children with special needs.
Parents will have the opportunity to share their feelings and hear from others in the group.

LANSING
Literacy event scheduled for May 7
Nathan Hale Elementary School will have a Literacy Luau from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 7 for students and parents.
The evening is intended to promote reading and will include activities and games centered around a beach theme, reading specialist Sue Brady said.
Parents should let the school know by today how many family members plan to attend the event.
BEECHER
Ill. 1 reopens after downed power line
After being closed much of Tuesday, Ill. 1 south of Beecher reopened early Wednesday morning.
ComEd finished repairing a downed transmission line overnight and the highway reopened at 8:30 a.m., Kim Morris-Johnson, ComEd spokeswoman, said.
The highway was closed for much of Tuesday and Tuesday night after the power line fell across the road sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, state police said. About 5 a.m., a vehicle struck the power line in the road, causing a two-car accident. No one was injured in the accident.
