Minor flooding a concern for NWI, but most damage farther north
A storm that caused hundreds of thousands to lose power in the Chicago region seemed to have struck a smaller blow against Northwest Indiana on Friday night.
National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Wilson said there was 1-inch hail in Lowell. The agency estimated there was 1 to 1.25 inches of rain in Jasper and Newton counties over a six-hour span from late afternoon to early evening.
About 9:15 p.m., National Weather Service meteorologist Amy Seeley said Northwest Indiana and Chicago's southeast suburbs were likely out of the woods.
Numerous flood advisories were issued for Lake and Porter counties, Seeley said. The flood advisory also included northern Jasper and northern Newton counties in Indiana, and southern Will County in Illinois.
"They had a lot of rain," she said. "I don't think it will be the worst event they'll experience or rank up there, but they are going to have some short-term flooding here. It looks like a dry weekend so there's plenty of time, and it shouldn't be a concern with any major flooding."
Jeff Burdick, a spokesman for ComEd, said Friday night the south Chicago suburbs had 744 customers without power compared to 230,000 total customers without power in Illinois. Most of the outages were in the northern region from Rockford east to Waukegan, he said. As of 9:30 p.m., he said the number of outages in the south suburbs had dropped to 355, down from a peak of 1,500 earlier in the evening.
The National Weather Service says weather spotters reported two tornadoes northeast of Lafayette about 7:30 p.m.
