During the Rotary Club of Lansing luncheon on Feb. 1, Christy Wielosinski and Terrence Moore, seniors at Thornton Fractional South High School, were honored as January Students of the Month. Service award | Chicago
De La Salle Institute students James Hartnett and Nathaniel Jacobson have been honored by the Cook County Sheriff's Department as recipients of the Cook County Service Award. The Cook County Service Award is given to youths throughout Cook County who contributed at least 100 hours of volunteer service to their communities in 2007. The honorees were feted at a reception held at McCormick Place.
Speech results | Homewood
The James Hart Speech Team excelled at the Jan. 26 SSJHSA Speech & Theatre Arts Festival at Colin Powell Middle School in Matteson. Of the school's 11 entries, 10 took the highest rating of "superior" and one took the next highest rating of "excellent." Speech team members will reprise their performances at the Drama Club's Dessert Theatre Fundraiser at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at James Hart. Tickets for the event will be available at the door for $5. Proceeds from this fundraiser go toward special projects and field trips.
Donor drive | South Holland
The South Suburban College Foundation recently completed its 2007 Donor Drive with $101,239.47 in donations marking its second highest fundraising total in its history. One-hundred percent of Donor Drive donations are used for scholarship funds for SSC students. Last year the foundation awarded more than 200 scholarships totaling more than $100,000, pushing the total awards to more than $600,000 since 1989.

Irish studies | Orland Park
Registration has started for St. Xavier University's noncredit Irish Studies certificate program this spring at the Orland Park campus.Students explore Ireland's heritage through an interdisciplinary program of history, the Gaelic language, literature, art, film and music. St. Xavier offers the program at its Orland Park campus through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Registration for a single class is $165, and students will receive a $30 discount if registering for more than one class per semester. Classes begin in March and will include Gaelic Language II, Irish Women Writers: Contemporary Short Stories by Women from Ireland, Modern Irish History 1950-Present and Researching Your Irish Roots: It Can Be Done!

Loan assistance | University Park
The CenterPoint for Entrepreneurs at Governors State University recently passed the $100 million mark in loan assistance. Since 2000, the center has helped 275 local entrepreneurs to obtain more than $105 million in loans to start or expand businesses throughout the Chicago southland. The CenterPoint for Entrepreneurs has provided more than 15,000 hours of business consulting, training and assistance to the southland business community. Through its network of specialists' centers CenterPoint makes available to its clients a wide variety of free or affordable services.
