SCHERERVILLE | A long-awaited intersection improvement project is expected to get under way this summer.

For six years, Schererville officials have been waiting for Lake County to acquire the northeast corner of Burr Street and 73rd Avenue so the work can begin.

The negotiations are complete, and the county agreed to pay the land owner $60,000 for compensation, loss of property and relocation of the owner's garage, Lake County Commissioner Gerry Scheub said.

"We hope to have everything signed, sealed and delivered Monday morning," Scheub said.

Schererville officials were happy to hear that the property was acquired.

"It's about time," Town Manager Bob Volkmann said.

When it first was discussed six years ago, the town and county divided up property acquisition and reconstruction work.

"The town was ready the first year to do it, and between property tax stuff and budget constraints at the county level, it became harder and harder for them to get it accomplished," Volkmann said.

Having multiple jurisdictions involved complicated the effort.

Last year, the county agreed to turn over the project to Schererville and pay $190,000 toward the work, Volkmann said.

The project includes a traffic light, turn lanes and widened streets to help ease traffic congestion.

The town already has paid about $100,000 toward the cost of the project, in legal fees, property acquisition and other "soft" costs, Volkmann said.

He said that, in the time the project has been in the works, costs for things such as labor, fuel and paving have increased between 20 and 30 percent. The town will have a better idea of the cost when the work is put to bid.

Bids could be awarded April 9 or 23, and construction would take about 90 days, Volkmann said.

"The idea is to get it bid out and get it under construction for this season," he said.
