Republicans set to pick AG candidate next week
INDIANAPOLIS | Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas added the finishing touches Wednesday to a near sweep of support from Indiana's elected Republican power brokers.
The two-term mayor, who is seeking the GOP nomination for state attorney general against Greg Zoeller, announced endorsements from more than two dozen state legislators, including Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, and House Minority Leader Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis.
"As an attorney focusing on elder law and an elected official, Jon is highly qualified to serve as Indiana's consumer protection watchdog," Bosma said in a statement. "Protecting the rights and consumer interests of Hoosiers is a critical issue, and I very much look forward to working with Jon Costas as a partner in this effort."
Zoeller has served as chief deputy to Attorney General Steve Carter since 2001, and he has the backing of his boss. But nearly every other Republican elected to statewide office has followed Gov. Mitch Daniels' lead and endorsed Costas.
Zoeller has lived in Indianapolis for years, but his New Albany, Ind., roots have held down his attempt to join a fall GOP ticket that already includes two southern Indiana names -- Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Tony Bennett, the party's choice for state schools chief. Delegates are scheduled to select the Republican nominee for attorney general Monday at the state party convention in Indianapolis.
