MERRILLVILLE | A garage fire late Thursday morning in the 3200 block of West 74th Place destroyed the garage and its contents but left no one injured.
Ross Township Fire Service District One Chief Thomas Westbury said when firefighters arrived at the scene at 11:30 a.m., they "got a good hit" on the blaze but soon had to stop fighting the fire when power lines fell through the roof of the garage and landed on a car.
Firefighters then had to wait for NIPSCO to shut off the power to finish extinguishing the fire, which took about half an hour, fire officials said.
Firefighters were able to keep the blaze contained to the garage even though they had to wait to quell the blaze, Westbury said.
Westbury said the cause of the fire is still uncertain.
