Gerald Bolkema was rear-ended and killed Saturday while riding his bicycle at West 165th Avenue and U.S. 41, the Lake County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

Officer John Verbich said an unidentified man was driving a black 1999 Ford Contour when he struck Bolkema, a 53-year-old Munster resident, at 7:30 a.m.

"The investigation is still pending, and we plan to talk to the driver this week," Verbich said.

He declined to identify the driver because of the ongoing investigation.

No charges have been filed against the driver, Verbich said.

Bolkema was a partner in the Chicago-based firm Baker & McKenzie LLP, the company's Web site says.

The lawyer was the married father of three sons and one daughter, and he had a grandson, said Braden Bolkema, the eldest son.

Bolkema called his father a "family man," adding he was a cyclist who competed in races and participated in charity functions.

He said the family is making funeral plans for Friday at Schroeder Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Road, Lansing.
