Volunteers Needed | Chicago Heights

South Suburban Humane Society is in need of volunteers to help with data entry, dog walking, dog bathing and playing with the cats. The shelter is at 1103 W. End Ave.

ReStore | Chicago Heights

Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs has opened a ReStore at 180 W. Joe Orr Road. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The store sells new, gently used and salvaged merchandise such as furniture, appliances, kitchen and bath countertops, light fixtures and more. The store needs volunteers, customers and donations of merchandise or cash.

Volunteer opportunities | South suburbs

Ingalls Hospice and Home Care offers help to the South Suburban community. In fiscal year 2006-07, volunteers donated more than 1,900 hours of their time in activities such as providing support to patients and families in their homes and inpatient units, running light errands, filing, answering phones and clerical duties, preparing bereavement mailings and contributing bereavement support and staffing information desks

Supporting the military | Thornton

Reach Out Together meets at Thornton United Methodist Church, 712 Chicago Road. The group works to boost morale and support service personnel stationed stateside and abroad. People with talents and abilities including baking, photography, art, writing or crafting are encouraged to attend.

Meal managers | Calumet City

St. Victor Church sponsors a community meal from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoons in the rectory hall of the church, 554 Hirsch Ave. Meal managers are needed to shop for, prepare, serve and clean up during the event.

Tutors, mentors | Chicago and its suburbs

The Tutor/Mentor Connection is building a database of organizations that offer volunteer-based tutoring and/or mentoring in the Chicago region, including Northwest Indiana. Organizations are shared on a Web site in an effort to give recognition to these organizations, show where there are needs, and encourage others to become involved as volunteers, leaders, donors and/or business and university partners. The group organizes a conference every May and November to draw the programs together.

Volunteer opportunities | Chicago Heights

Union Street Gallery seeks volunteer docents for adult and school tours. Volunteers will educate in an art environment. Artists, art historians, or those with a passion for the arts who are interested in bringing their talents to the gallery, should send a resume or curriculum vitae to the attention of Karen Leluga, Gallery Administrator. Other volunteer opportunities are available such as hosting activities for opening night receptions, assisting in public relations opportunities, or as a gallery assistant student intern.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago has many volunteer opportunities. All volunteers are required to attend a four-hour orientation session, held one Saturday a month.

MEALS ON WHEELS | Northwest Indiana

Meals on Wheels needs volunteer to help deliver hot, nutritious meals to the homebound elderly, ill and disabled throughout Lake County. Volunteers drive in their own communities usually twice per month for about two hours. There is flexible monthly scheduling, and meals are only delivered weekdays. Training is on-the-job with an experienced volunteer. All meals are prepared in a central kitchen in Merrillville. Hot meals are delivered late morning to local drop-off points within each community. After meals are transferred to local volunteers, they are delivered to client homes around noon.

SHOP VOLUNTEERS | Munster

Volunteer opportunities are available at Care to Share Gifts, 1842-B 45th St. Retail experience and/or secretarial skills are desired but not necessary. Care to Share Gifts is a donation/consignment shop whose proceeds benefit the nonprofit agency Hospice of the Calumet Area. With the exception of a part-time manager, the shop is run entirely by volunteers. Donations of items also are needed for the shop.

Paws Critter Crossing is in need of volunteers. They will help with a variety of tasks ranging from feeding newborn animals, cleaning the barn, mowing, grooming, feeding, giving vaccinations and repairing and painting fences. Critter Crossing is at 20227 Stony Island Ave.
