MERRILLVILLE | The son of the 61-year-old Merrillville man shot to death Saturday has been charged with murder.

Shawn Jackson, 26, is accused of shooting his father, Larry Jackson, once in the head in a home in the 1500 block of West 82nd Place. The younger Jackson faces a maximum sentence of 65 years in prison if convicted, prosecutors said.

Larry Jackson's wife called police about 9:45 a.m. Saturday and told them Shawn Jackson killed her husband, court records state.

She was sitting at the dining room table when Larry Jackson came home with groceries, the court documents allege, and their daughter was in the basement at the family computer.

Larry Jackson put away some groceries and then walked past Shawn Jackson, who was sitting on the stairs, court records state.

After a few seconds, Larry Jackson's wife heard a loud pop and found the man in the upstairs hallway, court records allege.

Larry Jackson's daughter told police she heard her mother screaming and then saw Shawn Jackson walk into the kitchen with a black gun in his hand.

Larry Jackson later was transported to Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus where he was pronounced dead about 10:25 a.m., police said.

Merrillville police Operations Cmdr. Lance Huish said the motive for the shooting remained unclear Monday.

Huish said after the shooting occurred, Shawn Jackson was taken into custody after he approached Merrillville and Lake County detectives standing outside of his home and said he needed to talk to somebody.

Huish said neither Larry Jackson's wife nor his daughter appeared to know where the son had obtained the gun.
