About the group:

Founded in 1994. Provides food relief to more than 500,000 people each month. Everyone qualifies. Nonprofit organization. Local host sites include New Life Lutheran Church in Crown Point, My Sister and Me Ministries in Gary, Hobart Jubilee Worship Center of God in Hobart, Faith Bible Church in Lowell, Family Bible Church in Portage, Emmanuel Church in Sauk Village and Kingdom Christian Center in South Holland. Mission: Angel Food Ministries is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and contributing to benevolent outreaches in communities throughout the United States.

Special events: The menu for Angel Food varies from month to month, and all orders through Angel Food are ordered and picked up at local host sites: churches, organizations, schools and outreaches throughout the country. For $30, customers receive a box with fresh and frozen items that retail for between $60 and $75. Specialty boxes containing steaks, chicken and pork also are available. There is no limit to the number of boxes an individual can receive and no applications to fill out. Angel Food Ministries participates in the U.S. Food Stamp program using the Off-Line Food Stamp Voucher system.

Advice: "We wanted to do an outreach to the community, and that's why our church chose this ministry," said Barbara Kortokrax, Angel Food Ministries director at Faith Bible Church in Lowell.

People might be surprised to know: "The price you can get groceries for," said Barbara Kortokrax. "You get a lot of food for $30."
