Scully warns governor plans to cut House Democrats' projects
CHICAGO HEIGHTS | Mayor Anthony DeLuca and city residents received a sobering message Monday from state Rep. George Scully, D-Flossmoor: Don't expect much help from Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Although a state budget recently was passed after a lengthy legislative session, Blagojevich announced that he would veto a major portion of it, Scully said during a City Council meeting.
About $250,000 for Chicago Heights, the Chicago Heights Park District and Bloom Township is in the budget, Scully said. The money for Bloom Township specifically was earmarked to repair its swimming pool, he said.
"My fear is that the governor is going to veto these items out of the budget," Scully said. "I haven't gotten along very well with the governor recently, and I'm afraid that he is going to express his disagreement with me by line item vetoing those three items."
Scully told the council he had done his job in trying to obtain resources from Springfield, and said that although he does not know how Blagojevich will decide what to trim from the budget, "he has pretty much specifically said the House Democrats are gonna get their projects cut."
DeLuca expressed his bewilderment that Blagojevich, a Democrat, would look to cut funding from the communities of his fellow party members.
"It seems these days, the governor's doing a lot of things that are shocking, so I guess it's not surprising," DeLuca said.
