PORTAGE: Disabled would receive same price break as senior citizens
PORTAGE | The City Council just approved raising trash fees last month and the ordinance is already up for an amendment tonight.
But, if passed, the amendment will be good news for disabled residents.
Last month the council approved hiking trash fees from $5 per month to $12 per month for most residents. An exception in the original ordinance was a reduced fee for qualifying senior citizens of $9 per month.
The discounts are likely to be extended to qualified disabled residents. Residents who are disabled or a disabled American veteran can apply to reduce their monthly trash fee to $9. Disabled persons seeking a discount will have to show proof of the disability and must reapply every year for the discount.
The City Council will consider the new discount when it meets at 6:30 tonight in council chambers at City Hall.
Also on tonight's agenda:
* A public hearing on the proposed revocation of a tax abatement for Capitol Wholesale Meats. The company purchased land at AmeriPlex at the Port, received an abatement from the city about three years ago, but never constructed the new facility.
* A public hearing for the petition to vacate a street easement on Marine Street for David Zakutansky.
* Appointments to the Portage Downtown Business Improvement District.
* Several transfers and appropriations.
