Pain seminar | Flossmoor
Discover solutions for shoulder and knee pain and learn how to start living life without pain by attending a free shoulder and knee pain seminar to be held from 6 to 7 p.m. July 18, at Ingalls Family Care Center, 19550 Governors Highway. The seminar will be presented by David Smith, orthopedic surgeon on staff at Ingalls who has special expertise in treating shoulder and knee pain and improving mobility with a focus on using the least invasive treatments. Smith will discuss joint related problems such as pain, arthritis, rotator cuff injuries and meniscal tears of the knee, as well as provide an overview of the anatomy and latest surgical procedures for repair of the shoulder and knee.

Yoga for stress | Lansing
Lan-Oak Park District will offer a yoga class from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, July 12 to Aug. 16, in the multipurpose room at the Eisenhower Center, 2550 178th St. The class will teach stress management techniques to reduce muscle tension, focus and relax the mind, lower blood pressure and heart rate and reduce risk of heart disease. Class requirements include a yoga mat, bath towel, small blanket and loose clothing. The fee is $50 residents, $55 nonresidents. Class is for ages 16 and older.

Reaccredited | University Park
The College of Health Professions at Governors State University announced that its master and bachelor of social work degree programs have been reaccredited by the Council on Social Work Education for eight more years. The Master of Social Work program at Governors State was first accredited in 2003 for a four-year period. The university's bachelor of social work program has been accredited since the 1980s. The reaccreditation for both programs is good through 2015.

Driving skills | Hazel Crest
Community residents 50 and older can work on their behind-the-wheel skills with a two-session course offered by Advocate South Suburban Hospital and the American Association of Retired Persons. The course will be taught in a two-day session, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 18 and 19, in the hospital auditorium, 17800 S. Kedzie Ave.
The course will help drivers refine their skills, develop defensive driving techniques, and re-familiarize themselves with rules of the road and license requirements. Participants who attend both days of the course may be eligible for a reduction in car insurance rates. The program costs $10, payable to AARP. Registration is required.

Free screenings | South suburbs
Advocate South Suburban Hospital will host a series of screenings this month. Free blood pressure screenings are offered from 10 a.m. to noon every Tuesday in the hospital lobby.
From 10 to 11:30 a.m. July 11, free cholesterol screenings will be provided at Senior Catholic Charities, Bernadine Manor, 1700 Memorial Drive, Calumet City.
From 4 to 6 p.m. July 18, free cholesterol and blood pressure screenings will be provided at the Hazel Crest Park District, 2600 W. 171st Place St., Hazel Crest.
From 9 to 11 a.m. July 23, free glucose screenings will be provided at Waterford Estates Retirement Center, 17400 S. Kedzie Ave., Hazel Crest. Registration is not required for the screenings.
Women with cancer | Hazel Crest
Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, offers a program called Look Good - Feel Better. The free program teaches female cancer patients makeup and skincare techniques to overcome the appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation. It is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. July 24 in the hospital's Lecture Hall 1. Participants will receive free makeup kits and advice from professionals on the best techniques to minimize the physical effects of their cancer treatment. Registration for this program is required.
