PORTAGE: Portage officers searching for two suspects in home invasion, assault
PORTAGE | Just a day after a man forced his way into a Portage home, sexually assaulted the woman who lives there and stole her safe, Portage police said they are confident the case will be solved soon.
Detective Capt. Terry Swickard said Friday police had two suspects and were working with Gary police to locate them for questioning.
Swickard said that after the Thursday morning home invasion, the investigation led police to believe the person who attacked the woman and stole her safe fled with another man. Police ended up impounding a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle seen in the area.
Swickard said no criminal charges were filed as of Friday afternoon, but he said investigators were continuing their investigation.
The attack occurred about 9:30 a.m. Thursday at a home on Mercedes Avenue. A 40-year-old woman told police a man -- described as a tall, thin black man with a thin mustache wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt and blue jeans -- pushed his way into her house when she answered the front door.
The man threatened her with a handgun and bound her hands with duct tape, according to police spokesman Sgt. Keith Hughes. After he bound her, the man sexually assaulted her and stole her safe, Hughes said.
When officers arrived with a canine, they found a knife in the woman's driveway, although police said it was not clear whether the knife had been used in the assault.
