Security officer faces charge after teen was choked unconscious
VALPARAISO | As a loss prevention officer at Kmart in Valparaiso, Justin Remschneider has helped put plenty of people behind bars.
But now Remschneider is in trouble after Valparaiso police said he choked a teen shoplifting suspect until the teen lost consciousness and went limp Thursday evening in the store's security office.
Police said that after reviewing video of the incident and conferring with a deputy prosecutor, it was determined that a warrant would be requested to arrest Remschneider, 25, of Valparaiso, on a misdemeanor battery charge.
The teen shoplifting suspect -- a 15-year-old boy from Hebron -- faces charges of theft and resisting.
Valparaiso police said they were called to the store at 6:10 p.m. Thursday after the boy's mother -- who was with him in the security office -- witnessed her son being choked and yelled for her daughter to call 911.
Police said their investigation showed that the boy separated from his mother while inside Kmart and stole six fishing lures worth $47.20. Police said Remschneider confronted the family in the parking lot and escorted them to the office.
Police said Remschneider handcuffed the boy and removed lures from his pants pockets. Remschneider was aware of an additional item wedged between the boy's pants and left leg. Police said the boy's mother began to search for the item, at which time the boy started flailing uncontrollably.
Remschneider then put the boy in a choke hold until he passed out for a brief period, police said. An off-duty Valparaiso officer who was at the store and quickly responded to help diffuse the situation. Police said the boy was checked by medics, then was medically cleared. Police said that after taking statements, they released the boy to his mother.
Remschneider could not be reached for comment at the store Friday morning and a store manager said the store would not be commenting about the incident.
