VALPARAISO | A bomb threat scratched into a women's bathroom stall at Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus on Monday morning led to the hospital being placed on lockdown for a few hours while authorities and hospital officials conducted a search.
The message -- which mentioned Monday's date -- was discovered shortly before 10 a.m. and Valparaiso police were notified at 10:08 a.m. Valparaiso Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Grennes said hospital officials didn't know exactly how long the message was on the stall. Police checked the area without finding anything suspicious, so they cleared the call and asked hospital security to call if anything was discovered out of place anywhere in the facility.
Hospital officials decided to place the facility on lockdown and bypass, and have the Porter County Sheriff's Department bomb unit conduct further searches. There was no evacuation, but during the lockdown, people were allowed to leave but could not come back in. New patients were diverted to other facilities, said Deb Butterfield, vice president of marketing and media relations.
Butterfield said employees notified patients and visitors about what was occurring.
"At all times, we were concerned about caring for our patients," Butterfield said.
She said at 2 p.m., the hospital was given the "all clear."
