SIGN UP AT NN | Morocco

Student registration will be held Aug. 6, 7, 8 and 11 in the commons area at North Newton Junior-Senior High School, 1641 W. 250 North. New students can register from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6, students with last names starting in A to L can register from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 7, students with last names starting in M to Z can register from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 and all students can register from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 11. Students new to the school district should call Linda Anderson at (219) 285-2252, ext. 214 for an appointment. Past book rental and bills must be paid before new fees can be paid. Each student must complete an Internet Consent Form, available at school and at registration. For a student parking permit, students should bring their driver's license, car information and complete an application due before school begins. The fist day of school is Aug. 15.

DIGITAL TV AND YOU | Merrillville

Lakeshore Public Television will host a free education session entitled "Digital TV & You" at 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Lakeshore Public Television studios, 8625 Indiana Place. The program will focus on the complete transition in February, 2009 to digital, including understanding the new technology, how to apply for the TV Converter Box Coupon Program (and if you need one) and Lakeshore PTV's upcoming multicast expansion. Handouts and a TV Converter Box voucher for easy ordering of the box will be available. Space is limited, register by Aug. 4.

SOCCER CELEBRATION | Hobart

Hobart High School Soccer Booster Club invites the public to a Soccer Celebration Day on Aug. 9 at Mundell Field on Wisconsin Street. A car wash will be held by the HHS soccer teams from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a cost of $5 per car or a donation. An Alumni Soccer Game will be held at 3 p.m.; all graduates of Hobart High School are welcome to participate in this co-ed soccer game. Bring shin guards and cleats.

INFO SESSION | Gary

Gary Community School Corporation will host a Student/Parent Informational Session for the New Secondary Experience on Aug. 6 at the Gary Career Center, 1800 E. 35th Ave. Administrators and faculty will discuss the New Secondary Experience and the importance of high school students staying focused and on track. New requirements created by the state and district for high school graduation will be outlined.

GOLF FOR MUSIC | Crown Point

Lake Central Band Boosters are seeking event sponsors and foursomes for its inaugural "Music is Important" golf outing Aug. 15 at White Hawk Country Club in Crown Point. The best-ball tournament begins with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Sponsorship opportunities include event sponsor, $5000; beverage cart sponsor, $1,000; driving range/putting green sponsor, $500 and hole sponsor, $300. There are spots for 144 players or 36 foursomes. The outing fee is $100 per player or $400 per foursome for dinner and amenities. There will also be multiple prize opportunities including a new car for a hole-in-one. Entry deadline is Aug. 6. REGISTER FOR SCHOOL | Hobart

Parents who have not yet registered their child for 2008-09 kindergarten are urged to contact the neighborhood elementary school as son as possible. Children must be five years old on or before Aug. 1 to be enrolled. Morning and afternoon kindergarten requests will be considered only if the child has completed state required immunizations, including 5 doses of DtaP/DTP/DT (diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis/diphtheria-tetanus- pertussis/diptheria-tetanus), 4 doses of polio vaccine, two doses of MMR (measles,mumps,rubeola), three doses of Hepatitis B and one dose of Varicella (chickenpox) on or after the first birthday or a record of disease. Parental history of chickenpox disease is acceptable (no vaccine needed). When registering, bring:the child's State Board of Health Birth Certificate, the child's immunization records, three Proofs of Residency including a driver's license indicating a Hobart address and any guardianship paperwork, if applicable.

BIKE-A-THON | Hobart

The Baptist Children's Home 28th Annual Bike-a-thon will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 9 at Inland Manor Baptist Church, 630 N. County Line Road. The ride begins at 9 a.m. Walkers will register at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt, lunch and snacks along the ride/walk. The route includes a 20-mile ride or 2-mile walk along the Prairie Duneland Trail. Baptist Children's Home is an international ministry caring for children who are orphaned, abused or neglected.

HUNTER SAFETY | Crown Point

The Lake County Parks Department hosts an Indiana Department of Natural Resources hunter's education safety course from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 15 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 16 at Lemon Lake County Park, 6322 W. 133rd Ave., just east of Cedar Lake. This two-day class is recommended for hunters of all ages and experience levels. It is required by state law for hunters born after Dec. 31, 1986. Participants will learn about firearms safety, survival, first-aid, wildlife identification and management, hunter responsibility and ethics. After 10 hours of class, participants will take a written exam. Those who pass will receive a certified hunter's education card good for life, required for those hunting out-of-state and or participating in state-sponsored hunts. Children 12 and younger are required to have an adult present at class. Registration is required. Another session will be held Sept. 12 and 13.
