DINNER THEATER | Hobart
Retro Act presents "A Girl Could Get Lucky," a show about middle-age romance that is both funny and touching, in a dinner theater setting March 1 at Elks Lodge 1152, 3580 W. 61st Ave. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., family-style dinner featuring baked chicken, pork chops and fried fish is at 6 and show starts at 7. Tickets are $25.

ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY | Lowell
The Calumet Astronomical Society hosts an open house from 7 to 10 p.m. March 1 at the Thomas Conway Observatory, just south of Buckley Homestead. Members will answer questions about astronomy and provide visitors with a chance to view the planets, galaxies and other celestial objects through binoculars and telescopes. The Conway Observatory is southeast of Buckley's historic farm area. Take Hendricks Street south from Ind. 2 until it ends at Belshaw Road. Turn east on Belshaw. The first road on the right is Chase Street. Turn south on Chase and it's about three-fourths of a mile to the observatory. Dress for cold evening weather. Viewing with telescopes is contingent upon clear weather. Inclement, cloudy conditions will cause the program to be canceled without notice.

FISH FRY NIGHTS | Cedar Lake
Fish fries will be hosted by Marian Council 3840 Knights of Columbus from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 29 and March 14 at the council hall, 13039 U.S. 41. Menu features all-you-can-eat breaded and fried whitefish or plated servings of shrimp or fried chicken, along with a potato, cole slaw, applesauce, roll and butter, beverage and choice of homemade dessert. Cost is $9 for adults and $4.50 for children 4 to 11; younger children eat free. Add three shrimp for $2. Carry-outs will be available. Cash bar will be open. Proceeds benefit Cedar Lake Girls Softball League, Hanover Central Band and Cedar Lake Little league.

PRODUCERS MEET | Cedar Lake
Lake County Soil & Water Conservation District, in cooperation with the Cooperative Extension Service and the Natural Resource Conservation Service, will sponsor a Producers Breakfast Meeting on March 5 at Harry O's Restaurant at 133rd Avenue and U.S. 41. Corn after Corns, Corn Earworms Issues, and Proper Pesticide Disposal for this three-hour meeting will meet the requirements for chemical application requirements. Producers whose Private Pesticide Applicator Permit expires in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 or 2012 can receive two hours credit by attending the half-day program and paying the $10 fee toward re-certification. This year, up to 3.0 CCH1A/RT credits and 2.5 Pest Management CEU's will be offered. Remember to bring your private applicator card. THE EARLY DAYS | Merrillville
Step back in time with Bruce Woods, director of the Lake County Historical Museum, who will narrate a slide show featuring artifacts that stand as a reminder of earlier ways of life in Lake County at 2 p.m. March 1 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. Learn about farm implements, household items, clothing, and musical instruments. There is even a full-size replica of the canoe used by French explorer, LaSalle, to explore Northwest Indiana. View the items on display in the Periodicals Department. Refreshments will be served. Vietnam Veterans of America will host a No Limit Texas Hold 'Em Tournament on March 1 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and play begins at 7 p.m. Register at the door; buy-in is $60, with $40 to the pot, and there are no rebuys. Prize levels will be determined by the number of participants.

Knights of Columbus Msgr. Timothy F. Doody Council 9696 will co-host a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 29 at St. Mary School, 405 E. BALLROOM DANCING | Merrillville
Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department offers ballroom dance lessons from 7 to 8 p.m. on six Wednesdays, beginning March 12, at Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. Dancing is an excellent aerobic exercise and benefits the cardiovascular system. A minimum of 8 students is required. Cost is $40 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. Register by March 5.

Fred Schmidt American Legion Post 20, Auxiliary Unit 20 and the Sons of the Legion will serve the monthly breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. March 1 at the post home, 1401 N. Main St. All-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy, juice, coffee and milk cost $6 for adults, $5 for veterans and seniors 55 and older and $3 for children 6 to 15. Purdue University Calumet's Educational Opportunity Programs will celebrate success serving students from disadvantaged backgrounds by hosting a TRIO gala at 6 p.m. Feb. 29 in the campus' Calumet Conference Center. The programs - Educational Talent Search, McNair Achievement Program, Upward Bound and Student Support Services - seek to promote higher educational opportunities for low-income, first-generation college students and those with disabilities. Goal are to develop a TRIO network of graduates and community leaders and to raise money for a book fund for students lacking course materials.

Gibson Woods Wild Ones is a local chapter of the Wisconsin-based Wild Ones-Native Plants, Natural Landscapes. MEET THE MAC | Merrillville
Merrillville Adult Education is offering a Meet the Mac course on the use of iLife applications from 6 to 9 p.m. March 4 at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place. Go step by step through iTunes and learn how to import music from CD, create playlists, download music online, burn CDs and create custom covers and more. Import pictures into iPhoto and do basic retouching (lightening, red eye, etc.), create slide shows and photo scrapbooks. Part of the class will be filmed, and students will learn how to import home movies into iMovie and edit. Lastly, use all skills to create a website using iWeb. Course fee is $45. INTRO TO EFT | Merrillville
Merrillville Adult Education is offering an Introduction to EFT class from 7 to 8 p.m. March 4 at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a psychological form of acupuncture-without the needles or pain. This technique will help students "tap" into their potential and focus on the negative emotions that are holding them back, such as fear and phobias, anger, negative self-image, etc. Course fee is $39. SIMPLE COOKING | Lake Station
