LET FREEDOM RING | Lake Station
Lake Station Chamber of Commerce will host the annual 4th of July Parade, with the theme "Let Freedom Ring," at 5 p.m. July 3. Trophy categories are Best of Parade, one $200 winner, and first-, second- and third-place for Best Band Group, Best Business Float, Best Organizational Float, Best Private Special Edition Car, Best Company Special Edition Car, Best Organizational Motor Group, Best Marching/Walking Unit, Best Performing Unit, Best Private or Political Walking Group and Best Individual or Organizational Non Motorized Unit. Entries should begin lining up at 4 p.m. at Columbus Park, 29th and Clay Street. The parade route will travel east to DeKalb Street, north to Central Avenue, east to Ripley Street and south to Riverview Park, where prizes will be awarded. Completed entry forms and fee, $10 for nonprofit groups and $25 for others, must be received by June 29. A fireworks display will begin at dusk July 4 at Riverview Park, 2701 Ripley St.

Join a fun class featuring a trio of genealogy subscription databases: Ancestry Online, Heritage Quest Online, and ProQuest Obituaries, from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. DIRTY DANCING | Lowell
Lowell Parks and Recreation Department is accepting reservations through today for a luxury bus trip to see the musical "Dirty Dancing" Oct. 5 at the Cadillac Palace Theater. This new musical brings the smash hit movie to the stage, adding new scenes, new songs and more dancing. Tickets are $128, with $64 due at registration. Lowell parks office has moved to Freedom Park, 17105 Cline Ave., with office hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

GOLF LESSONS | Crown Point
Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department and CP Driving Range will provide golf lessons for women and children Thursdays, July 10 through Aug. 14 at CP Driving Range, 1504 N. Main St. Youth lessons will be held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and women's lessons will be from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Fee is $80 for residents and $100 for nonresidents. Classes will focus on a full swing with irons and woods, chipping, putting, pitching, etiquette and fundamentals. Register by July 3.

ALL ABOUT GALAXIES | Merrillville
"Galaxies and the Universe" is a presentation that will be featured at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, July 4, 11, 18 and 25 and Feb. 1, and Saturdays, July 19 and 26, at the Merrillville Community Planetarium inside Clifford Pierce Middle School, 19 E. 70th Ave. Learn the answers to questions about the Universe, stars and galaxies while exploring the skies of summer and fall and finding out about the Milky Way, Andromeda Galaxy and the Big Bang theory. Cost is $3 for adults and $2 for children. An outdoor observing session will be held, weather permitting. Seats should be reserved.

Learn about butterflies and earthworms at the Crown Point Community Library and its Winfield branch in July. It's all about bugs during the summer reading program and the Enviromobile team from Lake County Solid Waste Management District will provide youngsters with a chance to get up close and explore bugs living in their backyard There is no cost, but space is limited, so sign up at the Crown Point or Winfield library . GOLF LESSONS | Cedar Lake
Junior golf lessons will be offered to ages 6 to 17 this summer at the Lake County Park and Recreation Department's Cedar Creek Family Golf Center, 10483 W. 109th Ave. Cost is $75 for five, one-hour classes from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. July 7-11 or July 21-25. Junior golfers will learn the fundamentals of basic grip, stance, and club usage. Practicing drives, iron shots, and chipping and putting will implement this. Bring clubs, balls and water bottles. Registration and payment is required in advance.

TOUR DA FUN | Cedar Lake
Cedar Lake Parks and Recreation Department will host Indoor Track and Foolish Field Events from 9 a.m. to noon July 3 at Hanover Central High School, 10120 W. 133rd Ave., as their part of the Tour Da Fun, hosted by 12 park departments working together to offer free programs for men and women. Advance registration is required. Track events include: 3-lap walk race, 200 m, 100m, 50m. javelin (pool noodle) throw, disc (Frisbee) throw, and shot put (tennis ball). Ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third place. Carnival games include Pick a Duck, Jenga, Paper Airplane Toss, Tailgate, Stack Cups, Pick a Sucker, Penny Toss and Knockout Cans. Play for raffle tickets to possibly win your choice of 1 of 5 baskets. Lunch will be served at noon at the Cedar Lake Town Hall, 7408 Constitution Ave. Cedar Lake Summerfest will be hosting additional Senior Games at 2 p.m. at the Park of the Red Cedars, 7408 Constitution Ave., including Peeling a Apple, Bean Spitting, Name that Tune, and
free bingo.

DUCK RACE | Lowell
Lowell Chamber of Commerce will host its ninth annual Great American Duck Race at 11 a.m. July 5 at the Evergreen Park pond, East Commercial Avenue and Joe Martin Road. Adopt a duck at the Lowell Chamber of Commerce office, 428 E. Commercial Ave., or DeMotte State Bank, just across the street from the park. This year an added attraction will be a dunk tank and those attending the race can try to dunk a local celebrity.
