Car dealer reports break-in, auto theft

A 1994 Chrysler LHS was reported stolen Monday from inside Cleveland Auto Sales, 4695 W. 37th Ave., police Lt. Steve Houck said.

Someone entered the shop by pushing an air conditioning unit to the ground, he said.

Once inside, the burglar drove the car out of the shop, Houck said.

Police: Man steals $6 item, posts $400 bond

Phillip Wilbanks, 19, of Crown Point, was charged with shoplifting a $6 Michael Jordan wristband Monday from Champs Sports at Westfield Southlake mall.

Wilbanks admitted to the theft, police said. He was released from custody after posting a $400 bond, police Lt. Steve Houck said.

Commission approves moving 2 departments

The Crown Point Redevelopment Commission unanimously approved a motion Monday to move the city engineering and human resource departments from the building next to City Hall to Mayor Dave Uran's former transition headquarters on Broadway.

The offices, owned by developer Rossman and Associates, will house the departments for several years, the city reported. The departments are currently in the city-owned white house sandwiched between City Hall and the old Geisen Funeral Home building.

The lease will go before the Crown Point City Council for approval at 7 p.m. Monday night in the council chambers, 101 N. East St.

MERRILLVILLE

Police: Man arrested after hit-and-run crash

A 37-year-old man was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident and two warrants after a hit-and-run accident at 11:27 a.m. Monday, Merrillville police said.

Police said a vehicle driven by Gordon Dale Kazen ran a red light and struck two other vehicles at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Merrillville Road.

Kazen was arrested on two warrants, one from Porter County for failure to appear in court on a driving while suspended charge and another in Newton County for failure to appear in a battery case.

No one was injured in Monday's accident, police said.
