CROWN POINT | Crown Point police said Friday they are investigating a report a Wheeler Middle School teacher allegedly struck a student earlier this year.

Assistant Police Chief Jim Janda released a statement indicating a parent filed a report Wednesday regarding Wheeler Middle School teacher Eric Winn in connection with an alleged battery. No charges had been filed in the case as of Friday.

The incident reportedly occurred during the second semester and involved a juvenile in a third-period health class, police said.

"The parent reported that during the course of the year beginning in January, the teacher threw a dry erase marker at the student, used a map pointer to poke the student in his back and -- at one point -- made the student stand inside a closet," Janda said Friday.

Janda said the police inquiry's findings would be presented to the Lake County prosecutor's office.

Crown Point Superintendent Teresa Eineman said Winn, who was in his first year of teaching at the Crown Point school, taught health and physical education to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Winn submitted a resignation in April that was approved by the Crown Point School Board.

However, his last day was Tuesday. Eineman said a substitute was in place for Winn on the last day of school, which was Wednesday.
