Calumet City | Independence Day was commemorated a day early Friday in Calumet City.
The Freedom's Eve celebration kicked off America's 233rd birthday behind Thornton Fractional North High School with a carnival, food, music and fireworks.
Recreation Superintendent Chris Pejka said the festival is kept at an affordable rate for families.
"We keep it cheap so people can have fun. You can get a bracelet for unlimited rides for $10," she said. "You can buy grilled food, or you can bring your own. We don't stop people from bringing their own food."
The Calumet City Fire and Police department vehicles were on display.
Children amused themselves crawling around the inside of a police car, setting off the siren.
A jail was on display for people to see what its like on the other side of the law. Participants allowed the police to lock them in to experience a few minutes of confinement.
"We bring out the jail just for fun," police Sgt. Bill Siems said.
The Fire Department opened up the family safety home trailer to teach kids about fire prevention.
While the children played games and families enjoyed food and live music, the biggest anticipation was for the fireworks show at dusk. Families were encouraged to sit on blankets or hang out in the bleachers.
