RECITAL | Valparaiso

A percussion prodigy will perform at the Valparaiso University Center for the Arts during a March 25 concert featuring classical Indian music. Rohan Rhythm, featuring 20-year-old percussionist Rohan Krishnamurthy and violinist Ayano Ninomiya, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in a concert that is free and open to the public.

Krishnamurthy has won critical acclaim for his mastery of the South Indian classical drum, the mridangam, and performed numerous concerts in North America and India since the age of nine. He recently presented a weeklong performance of "Echoes," a novel concerto for mridangam and sting orchestra, with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra that attracted nearly 13,000 school children from across Michigan.

BEGINNING SPANISH | Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Department of Parks and Recreation offers new Beginning Spanish classes for youth and adults. The youth class is for children in grades 3-6 and will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 8 through May 8, 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Banta Center. Children will be introduced to vocabulary and dialog in an exciting and interactive atmosphere. The youth fee is $80 for residents and $90 for non-residents. The adult class if for those 16 years old and older and will meet once per week on Thursdays, April 10 through May 8 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Banta Center. Participants will learn practical Spanish in a relaxed, small-class environment. The adult fee is $50 for residents and $60 for non-residents. The Banta Center is located at 605 Beech St.

WOODCARVING SHOW | Portage

The Duneland Woodcarvers' 32nd annual woodcarving show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 5 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 6 at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road. The show will feature 80 carvers and vendors, original woodcarvings, demonstrations, hourly door prizes and carving supplies. Admission is $4 per person. Children younger than 12 years will be admitted free.

spring break fun days

The Valparaiso Family YMCA will host fun days for March 24-28. This is open to children in the community in grades kindergarten through 5. Special field trips are being planned. Other activities will include swimming, arts and crafts and gym time. Children need to bring a sack lunch, drink, swimsuit and towel each day; snack and drink will be provided. The fun day runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM | Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Family YMCA will be accepting registrations for preschool age children (3 years n 5 years of age) for the 2008/2009 calendar year. Children will enjoy a fun and enriching program that introduces developmentally appropriate experiences in a nurturing classroom setting. Preschool-age children will enjoy swimming, gym time, field trips, Spanish, singing, music and much more. Extended care is also available.
