A Munster man will be one of six Purdue University students demonstrating the latest in engineering technology while attending the annual Automation Fair on Nov. 14 and 15 in Chicago.

Jeffrey Schmidt is a senior majoring in manufacturing engineering technology. Schmidt, who graduated from Munster High School in 2004, said he intends to work for an automotive or heavy equipment company after he graduates.

Schmidt said Monday that he's excited about the prospect of the fair and a chance to come home for a few days.

Students will man a booth featuring an interactive display that will show computerized and automated equipment that can scan a participant's identification card and produce an engraved name badge in minutes.

While they are waiting, participants will be able to play an interactive "duck hunting game" manufactured by the students using the same kind of technology. What makes the project unique is the ability to have the engraving done on the spot.

Schmidt and his classmates have been working on the project for about six weeks and expect the technology to be ready by the time the fair begins next week.

Professor Brad Harriger said students from Purdue have participated in the fair, which is sponsored by Rockwell Automation, for several years. Rockwell also donates equipment to the university for student use.

"The equipment that we use allows us to make modifications on the spot," Harriger said.

That includes adding color or graphics.

Harriger also is director of the School of Technology Manufacturing Center.

Students who graduate from the computer-integrated manufacturing program can obtain jobs as manufacturing engineers, production engineers or field engineers, Harriger said. He said Rockwell hires many Purdue graduates.

The other students who will attend the fair are senior Matthew Auter, of West Lafayette; senior Brandon Garman, of Angola; senior Matthew Adams, of Noblesville; senior Kevin Eccleston, of Huntington; and junior Joseph Bettenhausen, of Tinley Park.
