Police: C.P. man led them on chase, ran into squad car
CROWN POINT | A police officer and man had to be extricated from their vehicles Friday after the man deliberately slammed his car into a squad car during a chase through Schererville and Crown Point, police said.
Timmy Todd Zieman, 32, of Crown Point, led police on a chase that started with a domestic dispute call in Schererville and ended with a crash on 93rd Avenue near Broadway. Zieman and Crown Point police Officer John "Jack" Allendorf Jr. were injured in the crash.
Allendorf, 47, was transported to St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point for a leg injury and broken ribs, according to a news release from Indiana State Police, who is investigating the crash.
Zieman suffered a broken leg and what appeared to be self-inflicted knife wounds to the chest and throat, police said. He was taken to Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville but was later airlifted to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill., police said.
Authorities said the pursuit began after Schererville police received a report of a domestic dispute.
A Schererville officer attempted to stop Zieman's 1996 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck from leaving the area, police said, but Zieman fled the scene. Officers pursued the vehicle, but the chase ended when Zieman began traveling in a reckless manner in a residential area, police said.
A Lake County police officer later located the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but Zieman was again able to flee, police said.
The county officer continued to pursue the vehicle with an Indiana state trooper when Zieman began traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of 93rd Avenue, police said.
Allendorf was traveling west on 93rd Avenue and noticed the truck was heading in his direction. Allendorf moved his squad off of the road, but Zieman deliberately swerved his car and hit the squad car, police said.
The crash caused the truck to roll on its side and sent the squad car into a field.
Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles after the crash and had to be removed.
Authorities blocked traffic for four hours on 93rd Avenue from Broadway to Madison Street while paramedics extricated Allendorf and Zieman and while authorities investigated the crash.
The investigation continues, and no charges have been filed yet, police said.
