A fatal accident involving a passenger vehicle and a semitrailer early Thursday morning jammed traffic on Interstate 80/94 well into the morning commute.

According to Indiana State Police, a 2007 Volvo semitrailer was traveling westbound in the right center lane when a 2006 Chevrolet Impala in the right lane veered over into the semi's lane and hit the middle of the semi.

The driver of the Impala, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene of massive trauma and had to be extricated from the vehicle, police said.

Killed in the accident was Yolandria Davis, 25, of the 1700 block of Roosevelt Street in Gary, a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office said.

Davis' cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma as a result of a motor vehicle accident, the spokesman said.

Larry G. Wroby Jr., 29, of Gary, was the front seat passenger in the Impala and was not wearing a seatbelt. Wroby was taken to The Methodist Hospital's Northlake Campus in Gary with head and brain injuries.

Randy D. Carter, 39, of Bolingbrook, Ill., was driving the semitrailer and was not injured in the accident. He was wearing his seatbelt.

The westbound right three lanes were closed for more than two hours for reconstruction of the crash, removal of the injured and deceased, towing of the vehicles and clean up of the roadway.

Fire departments from Gary and Hammond assisted at the scene as well as the Indiana Department of Transportation's Hoosier Helpers and the Lake County coroner's office.
