Valparaiso-area woman warns others after daughter finds pill in candy
UNION TOWNSHIP | A Valparaiso-area woman whose daughter received tainted candy from trick-or-treating is warning parents to check their kids' candy.
The woman, who asked that her name not be used, told The Times her 12-year-old daughter got the candy while trick-or-treating in the Salt Creek Commons subdivision west of Valparaiso.
Porter County police confirmed they received the woman's complaint Thursday morning and are investigating.
The woman said her daughter found a small blue pill with C-5 imprinted on it -- a pill later determined to be the antihistamine Clarinex -- inside a box of Graveyard Goodies candy. The Graveyard Goodies were just one item inside a treat bag obtained from an unknown home.
"I just want parents to double check their kids' candy really well," the woman said.
"I don't want to see any kids hurt."
The woman said her daughter, who discovered the pill in her candy, is a smart girl and quickly let her know what she found. The woman said the tainted candy incident will spell the end of her 12- and 14-year-old daughters' trick-or-treating.
"Me and my husband don't think we're going to take them (or perhaps just go to a few trusted neighbors)," she said.
"It ruined my Halloween spirit."
