FALL REGISTRATION | E.C.

The School City of East Chicago has scheduled its fall registration for Central High School. On Aug. 11, seniors register from 9 to 11 a.m. and sophomores with the last names 1 through M sign up from 1 to 3 p.m. On Aug. 12, juniors register from 9 to 11 a.m. and sophomores with last names N through Z sign up from 1 to 3 p.m. On Aug. 13, special needs students sign up from 9 to 11 a.m. and makeup for all students is from 1 to 3 p.m. On Aug. 14, freshmen from Block and West Side junior highs register from 9 a.m. to noon and from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 15 is makeup date from 9 to 11 a.m.

YMCA PRESCHOOL | Hammond

Registrations are being accepted for Fall Discovery Preschool held at the Hammond Area YMCA, 7322 Southeastern Ave. Enroll child/children in a safe and fun environment to prepare for kindergarten, develop social skills and learn to relate to adults and other children. They also will play outdoors, learn beginning gymnastics, participate in gym activities and swim. Space is limited to 16 children per class.

SCHOLARSHIPS | Northwest Indiana

The Center of Workforce Innovations is offering 20 final-year college students a Career Advancement Account scholarship opportunity for up to $3,000. Applications are due Aug. 15 for the scholarships available to students completing a degree by June in one of these areas: engineering, logistics, advanced manufacturing, technology, life sciences or health care. To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria and cite it in the letter of interest: be a U.S. citizen and resident of Northwest Indiana, complete a degree or certification by the summer of 2009 and have a course study related to one of the above cited industries. SUPPLIES GIVEAWAY | Hammond

The seventh annual school supplies giveaway will be sponsored by Hammond City Councilman Anthony Higgs from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at Martin Luther King Park. The event also features free food such as hot dogs and hamburgers, soda and water.

CHARTER ENROLLMENT | Gary

Students are being accepted for enrollment at Charter School of the Dunes, 860 N. Lake St. The educational focus is a college preparatory curriculum for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, with active recruiting of youths in kindergarten through fifth grade. The school offers tuition-free education and no book rental fees. All school supplies are included at no charged, and uniforms are required. There are financial guidelines for the hot lunch program. Students from all communities and districts are welcome. School begins Aug. 21. Transportation is not available.

BACKPACK GIVEAWAY | Hammond

A backpack giveaway for youths in first to sixth grade is set for 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 9 at Orchard Drive Baptist Church, 3425 Orchard Drive. Pencils, paper, folders, erasers and other supplies will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. Parents must be with their children. While there, order Angel Food. A menu is available at the church.

SCHOOL IMMUNIZATIONS | Gary

The Department of Health and Human Services for the City of Gary is offering free immunizations, tuberculosis testing and lead screenings for school-age children who bring a complete shot record and are accompanied by an adult. Services will be provided from 9 a.m. t 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Genesis Convention Center, 1 Genesis Center Plaza.
