PORTAGE | The city's Parks and Recreation Department received a $32,800 planning grant through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs' Small Cities and Towns Development Block Grant program.

The funds are earmarked to design the restoration of the historic Linden Log Cabin.

The parks department received the cabin last year from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The goal is to restore the 150-year-old, Scandinavian-style home and locate it at Countryside Park, which includes the Trager farmhouse, outbuildings, barn and Alton Goin Historical Museum..

A year ago, the Park Board approved applying for the grant after it was learned that the state indicated it wanted more information and design on the project prior to giving a restoration grant.
