EAST CHICAGO

Recording artist visits East Chicago

Sony/BMI Recording artist Toby Love, currently nominated for four Billboard Awards, visits East Chicago Central High School at 1 p.m. Thursday to make a pitch for the importance of education.

He will also discuss music careers and how to pursue them.

One of the goals of this visit is to provide activities and support for inner city youth that will help them do well in school, avoid drugs and gangs, and find future adult success by advancing to college or steady employment, program sponsors said.

Toby's latest self-entitled CD and song 'Don't Cry,' which also features Alexis & Fido, is No. 10 on the Latin Rhythm Airplay and the General Latin music charts.

HAMMOND

Pain killer may have played role in woman's death

A Merrillville woman was declared dead Sunday morning after being found unresponsive in a Hammond residence on the 6900 block of Monroe Avenue.

Police spokesman Michael Jorden said a friend discovered Melissa Darragh, 25, of the 3300 block of Harms Road in Merrillville, unconscious and not breathing at about 8 a.m.

Darragh was transported to St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers, where the Lake County coroner's office was alerted at 8:51 a.m.

A police report states Darragh had been drinking and may have taken the prescription pain killer Darvocet. Toxicology results are not expected for at least 20 days, according to the coroner's office.
