HEART ATTACK PREVENTION | Valparaiso

Through funding from NWICA (Northwest Indiana Community Action) Porter County Aging & Community Services will host a presentation on Heart Attack Prevention by Patricia Ann Neely, RN, a Cardiac Rehab Supervisor for Porter Hospital, at the Friendship Senior Center, 1005 Campbell St. The presentation begins at 11:30 a.m. May 14. This program will discuss signs and symptoms of a heart attack, heart attack prevention and more. There is no charge for this presentation and it is open to the public. Lunch will be provided. HEARING HEALTH | Valparaiso

Michele Watts, AuD, Doctor of Audiology, will present a lunch and learn program on hearing health at 11 a.m. May 9 at the Village Park enrichment Center, 605 Beech St. This presentation will discuss how the ear works, signs you may have difficulty hearing, how hearing is tested, communication tips for increasing your ability to hear, and hearing amplification/assistive listening devices. A courtesy boxed lunch will be made available to participants. Seating may be limited, make reservations to Paula Nicholson, Program and Events Coordinator at Village Park

QUILT GUILD

The String-A-Long Quilt Guild will meet at 6 p.m. May 14 at the Valparaiso Public Library, 103 Jefferson St. Carol Frozolone from Carol's Quilt Cottage will be the guest speak and her program is on Hawaiian quilting.

SUPPORT NIGHT | Valparaiso

Clare Bridge of Valparaiso will host a free Alzheimer's Family Education and Support night beginning at 6:30 p.m. May 8 at 2501 Valparaiso St. The program is free to all caregivers and families in the community.

FARMERS MARKET | Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Farmers Market returned May 3 to a new location in downtown Valparaiso. Due to construction around the courthouse square, the new ‘home' for the market will be in the city parking lot located on the corner of Indiana and Lafayette Streets, next door to Greek's Pizzeria.

The market will be open on Saturdays only during the month of May from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then will expand to Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, starting in June through October. While produce is not available at this time, the farmers will be offering mostly perennials, annuals, and hanging baskets just in time for Mother's Day. New this season will be fresh Pierogi from Nina's Fresh Pierogi.

PORKER RUN | Lake County

Lake County ABATE hosts its annual Porker Run May 10, which includes stops at several locations around Lake County. Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lake County Convention Center and Visitors Bureau at Kennedy Avenue and Interstate 80/94 in Hammond. Cost is $10 per person. There will be a skills test at each stop, and food and drinks will be available at the last stop. Prizes will be awarded for first to third place in the skills test.

DONATIONS, VOLUNTEERS | Valparaiso

The Open Door Social Club is seeking donations of nonperishable food items, cleaning products, household and personal items, or money. The club, housed in the Margaret Stevens House, 402 E. Indiana Ave., is a program of Mental Health America of Porter County. Pantry items will be distributed to adults with mental illness who are living in the community. Volunteers also are needed for the Open Door Social Club. The group is looking for outgoing, encouraging and caring adults or groups to volunteer a few hours each month. The club offers activities and outings for adults with mental illness. The club meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Margaret Stevens House.

SWIMMING LESSONS | Chesterton

Registration for Summer Learn-to-swim lessons for Duneland School children will be held from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. May 20 and 21 at the Duneland Alternative Learning Center, 601 W. Morgan Ave., Suite 1. This program is open only to those students attending the Duneland Schools. Participants may register for only one session of time. Parents may register child(ren) who measure at least 42" to the chin (in order to touch the bottom) and must be eligible to be enrolled in kindergarten (or older) during the 2008-2009 school year for one of three sessions. Each session (10-one hour lessons) runs Monday through Friday at the Chesterton Middle School Pool. Session I (June 9-20), Session II (June 23-July 3 with a Saturday, June 28 lesson) runs from 9:30-10:30 a.m., 10:30-11:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; and Session III (July 21-Aug. 1) runs from 9:30-10:30 a.m. or 10:30-11:30 a.m. Classes are limited to 35 students per hour. Fee is $30 for ten lessons.

FUNDRAISER BENEFIT | Valparaiso

Mental Health America of Porter County will present a fundraiser to benefit mental wellness in Porter County. Porter County Unplugged is from 5 to 8 p.m. May 17 at The Franklin House, 58 Campbell St. This event is for ages 21 and older. There is a $5 entry fee per musician. Area musicians are invited to sign up now to compete in Porter County Unplugged, a benefit for Mental Health America of Porter County. Acoustic performers will compete for cash prizes, with audience votes determining the winners. The top awards will be $200, $100 and $50.
