A bus carrying Warren Elementary School students to school was rear-ended by a pickup truck last Wednesday, school officials said.

Robert McDermott, director of personnel and pupil services for the School Town of Highland, said the accident occurred at 7:33 a.m. the day before Thanksgiving break. No information about the incident was made available until Monday.

McDermott said a large pickup truck rear-ended the bus.

The bus driver had stopped to pick up four students at the corner of Martha Street and Idlewild Drive when the truck hit. All the emergency flashers and safety arms were operating at the time of the accident, McDermott said.

Police and paramedics responded and transported one third-grade boy to The Community Hospital of Munster, he said. The child was treated and released and no other injuries were reported.

The bus driver has been an employee for three years and was not cited, McDermott said.

Highland school officials are waiting for an official police report.

Highland Police Department officials could not be reached for more details.
