CHESS TOURNAMENT | Portage
Montessori Academy in the Oaks of Hobart will host its annual Spring Scholastic Chess Tournament March 1 at Portage Yacht Club, 1370 Ind. 249. The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $10 for the open-rated division and $8 for unrated divisions for entries made by Feb. 16. The event is open to children 5 to 18 years old. Food will be available. Trophies will be given to winners. Proceeds will fund Montessori Academy in the Oaks' trip to the national tournament.

BE A SAFE SITTER | Crown Point
A Safe Sitter class recommended for ages 11 and older will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Marian Education Center at St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Participants receive helpful tips to make them more confident caregivers. They learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door and when and how to call for help. They receive information on child development and age-appropriate activities as well as the business aspects of baby-sitting. To successfully complete the program, youngsters have to pass practical and written tests to show that they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency. TRAINS IN THE CITY | Crown Point
Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department and the Lionel Modular Train Club will set up a huge train layout, the fourth annual Trains in the City exhibit, for all ages to enjoy from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 16 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. See different scenes and layouts. Thomas the Tank Engine and Percy will run at the top of every half hour. Admission is free.

YOUNG CHAMPIONS | Hobart
Hobart Parks and Recreation Department and Young Champions, a national youth sports program, will hold cheerleading classes on Wednesdays starting Feb. 6 at the Hobart Community Center, 111 E. Old Ridge Road. Class time is 6 to 6:45 p.m. for ages 4 to 6, 7 to 7:45 p.m. for ages 7 to 10 and 8 to 8:45 p.m. for ages 11 to 15. There is a $7 nonrefundable registration fee and a $7 fee per class, with registration on the first night of classes. Young Champions has operated in Michigan for 15 years and is expanding into Indiana, teaching beginners through advanced students. Classes promote coordination, confidence, poise, fitness, artistic expression, teamwork and a competitive spirit. Student learn the fundamentals of dance and cheer, dance and parade routines, cheers, chants and jumps and how to try out and perform in front of an audience.

BUMPER BOWLING | Lowell
Preschoolers age 2 to 5, with parental participation, will enjoy bumper bowling in a six-week program sponsored by the Lowell Parks Department from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays, Feb. 14 to March 20, at Lowell Country Lanes on Lucas Parkway. TALENT SHOWCASE | Hobart
Ross Music theatre and M & M Productions will hold auditions for ages 8 to 16 for the annual Youth Talent Showcase at 1 p.m. Feb. 9 and 2 p.m. Feb. 17 at Center Stage Studio Theatre, 227 Center St. Performers should bring a prepared piece to sing, a dramatic or comic monologue or a short dance number. The act can be solo or with a group. There will be 6 to 10 rehearsals held with staff to help polish each act before the performance March 30. There is no cost to participate in this show. Crown Point Girls Softball is sponsoring free softball clinics on Sundays, Feb. 10, 17, 24, and March 2 in the Taft Middle School gym, 1000 S. Main St. Time is 1 to 1:50 p.m. for ages 6 and under and 8 and under groups, 2 to 2:50 p.m. for ages 10 and under and 3 to 3:50 p.m. for ages 12 to 14. The clinics will cover basic skills including throwing, fielding, hitting and some pitching. Bring a glove and wear tennis shoes (no bats needed). DANCE REVUE | Hammond
Indiana Ballet Theatre, a ballet and modern dance company in Northwest Indiana, will present its 15th modern and contemporary revue at 2 p.m. Feb. 10 at Towle Community Theatre, 5246 Hohman Ave. Kaleidoscope 3 is being directed by Amanda Tuohy and choreographed by modern instructors Amanda Tuohy and Christie Kamanaroff. Ice skating will be available at the 14,500-square-foot Deep River Ice Plaza, from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, 2 to 10 p.m. Fridays, noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 9 p.m. Sundays through Feb. 24, weather permitting.at Deep River Waterpark, 9001 E. U.S. 30. Food stands, heated bathrooms, the U.S. 30 Surf Shop and group and season pass sales offices will be open. Cost is $4 for adults, $3 for ages 14 and younger and 62 and older, and free for spectators. Skate rentals are $5. No hockey games or sticks, and no food, beverages or coolers can be brought into park.
