CROWN POINT | The construction of fencing on Main Street for the demolition of Master Transmission and possible redevelopment of the area was unanimously approved Tuesday by the Board of Works.

The fencing will block normal access to the sidewalk and five parking spaces on Main Street, Economic Development Director Eric Hammond said.

He said a pedestrian walkway would be provided through the area.

Board members attached several conditions to the fence construction.

Board member Mike Conquest asked Hammond to seek approval from the Indiana Department of Transportation and incorporate a few safety devices into the plan.

The board wants Hammond to add orange cones or fencing to warn motorists of the structure and a buffer on the north corner of the fence in case an accident occurs.

In other business, the board unanimously approved the addition of six volunteer firefighters.

Acting Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner said the St. John Fire Department agreed to train the new firefighters at no cost, saving the city about $1,200.

The board also approved ending the routine probationary status of volunteer firefighters Jeremy Gettler and Dave DeLor.
