VALPARAISO | One worker was hospitalized following a series of explosions that rocked Prairie Cable shortly before 11 a.m. Friday.
Valparaiso police said the worker, whose name was not immediately available, was transported to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus for treatment of facial burns.
An employee of Prairie Cable, located at Evans Avenue and Silhavy Road, said an outside contractor was doing electrical work on the building's main breaker/electrical distributing center and was installing new power runs when there was a small explosion.
The employee said he heard the explosion and started walking toward it when he saw someone helping the injured worker.
Two more explosions followed.
The man described the last two explosions as "ground-rattling."
The injured worker, who was able to walk, also got out of the building, but had facial injuries, he said.
Valparaiso police and firefighters responded to the scene along with Porter hospital medics and NIPSCO workers. Although flames flashed during the explosions, the building did not catch fire, according to fire officials and police.
