Surveyor candidate planning fundraiser

John E. Garcia, a Democratic candidate for Lake County surveyor, has scheduled a campaign kickoff for 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Wicker Park Clubhouse, 2125 Ridge Road. The donation is $100. Tickets are available at the door.

Munster native earns a $3,000 scholarship

Munster native Greg Pottorff won a $3,000 Verizon Legislative Intern scholarship last week for his work with state Sens. Karen Tallian, D-Ogen Dunes, and Jim Arnold, D-LaPorte.

Verizon honors one intern a year from each for the four legislative caucuses. Pottorff was one of 14 interns to work with Senate Democrats this legislative session, which began Jan. 8 and ended Friday. Legislative internships are open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students in good academic standing.

Pottorff, an Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis graduate with bachelor's degrees in political science and history, is working toward a master's degree at IUPUI.
