Police: No forced entry, no gun recovered
MUNSTER | Bleeding from bullet wounds to the head and body, a Munster man passed out as police arrived at his house early Tuesday morning, officers said.
Peter Borgia, 38, was in critical condition Tuesday night at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Investigators are focusing on family members who might have had access to Borgia's house on Oriole Drive off White Oak Avenue in Munster, said Munster police Sgt. Steven Kovacik.
Officers found no forced entry to the house and recovered no gun. Borgia fell unconscious before police could gather much information on a suspect, Kovacik said.
"We're still trying to piece it together," Kovacik said.
Borgia called police at 3 a.m. He suffered more than two gunshot wounds to the body and head, Kovacik said. Blood poured from the head wound, Kovacik said. Borgia was taken to The Community Hospital in Munster, then airlifted to Advocate Christ, Kovacik said.
Investigators believe Borgia's shooter used a handgun, Kovacik said. The lack of forced entry or burglary indicates no danger to Munster residents, Kovacik said.
"It doesn't appear to be a random shooting," Kovacik said.
Kovacik hoped Tuesday afternoon for Borgia's recovery, in part because Borgia could likely give more information on his shooter. Borgia still had bullets inside him Tuesday afternoon that Munster police planned to analyze once the bullets were extracted, Kovacik said.
Borgia was unarmed when police arrived, Kovacik said.
If Borgia dies, his shooting would be Munster's second homicide of 2007. Investigators still seek the killer who disemboweled Wayne P. Smith, 25, of 7618 Manor Drive in early June.
