Wrong-way driving prompts arrest

CHESTERTON | Police were alerted by a McDonald's employee to a Ford Taurus that drove through the drive through backwards and then pulled in to the Taco Bell parking lot on Indian Boundary Road.

The Chesterton squad car pulled behind the Ford and followed the driver onto Indian Boundary, where he crossed the center line while turning.

After pulling the car over, the driver, James Perkins, 23, of Crown Point, was given field sobriety tests and a portable breath test. Perkins reportedly had a blood-alcohol content of .14. He was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

CHESTERTON

WEDNESDAY

Vandalism. Four sentences spray painted in black paint were found on the bike trail west of 23rd Street.

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP

WEDNESDAY

Burglary. Donna and Patrick Kekelik told police they arrived home and found their Midway Drive residence had been broken into. Three video game systems, a bicycle and a bottle of prescription drugs were reported missing. The loss is valued at $1,280.

Burglary. Police responded to an alarm and discovered forced entry into R & B Customs off of U.S. 6. Nothing was reported missing at the time.

Criminal mischief. Pinewood Drive resident Charlie Miller told police the passenger side window of his Toyota Tercel had been broken. The window's value is estimated at $100.

VALPARAISO

WEDNESDAY

Burglary. Robert Christopher of Wood Street reported two visor organizers containing 18 CDs, receipts and his vehicle registration stolen from his GMC Sonoma pickup truck while parked in his driveway. He also found a dent behind the driver's door. Damage is estimated at $350.

Burglary. Michael Brown of Institute Street reported the driver's side window of his Toyota Yaris broken overnight and his navigation system stolen. Damage to the window is estimated at $300.

Burglary. James Hosfeld of Sturdy Road told police the driver's side window on his Ford Explorer was broken and his radar detector was stolen. Damage to the window is estimated at $200.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP

WEDNESDAY

Burglary. Robert W. Fox, of Williamsburg Drive, told police he heard glass break and observed an unidentified person exit the Williamsburg Manor office building. A 32-inch Emerson LCD flat-screen television and an amplified high definition antenna were reported stolen, valued at $600.
