WAITING FOR WINGS | Highland

Waiting for Wings is at 1 and 3 p.m. July 8 at the Lake County Public Library's Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St. School-age children will watch a short movie based on the book "Waiting for Wings" by Lois Ehlert and make a magnetic dry erase butterfly note board. Register.

Don't Bug Me - I'm Reading is at 6:30 p.m. July 10 at the Lake County Public Library's Dyer-Schererville branch, 1001 W. Lincoln Highway. Young readers, 10 and older, will review books that they have read and munch on a snack called bugs-in-my-ice-cream. Sign up in advance.

POOL PARTIES | Hammond

Join Mayor Thomas McDermott at the Mayor's Pool Parties from 6 to 8 p.m. July 9 at Martin Luther King Pool and July 23 at Hessville Pool. Hammond residents are invited for free swimming, dancing and refreshments. Parties are weather-dependent.

YOUTH VOLLEYBALL | Dyer

A six-week volleyball program for 9- to 10-year-olds and 11- to 12-year-olds takes place July 7 to Aug. 11 on the grass courts of Northgate Park. Youths 9 and 10 years old meet from 5 to 6 p.m.; fee is $30 for residents and $35 for nonresidents. Youths 11 and 12 years old meet from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.; the fee is $35 for residents and $40 for nonresidents. The program will cover the basics of volleyball including introduction of bumping, serving, setting and more. As time permits, students will get into scrimmages. Today is the last day to register.

Youth Day | East Chicago

Youth Day is at 10:45 a.m. July 13 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 3902-06 Alexander Ave. No registration is necessary and transportation is available. The theme is "youth being united, joyful and in prayer."

SUMMER CAMP | Whiting

Whiting Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for its summer play camp programs. Children 4 to 6 years old meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and youths 7 to 12 years old meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Camps already have begun at the Whiting Community Center, 1938 Clark St. Fees apply.

ART IN PARK | Highland

North Township Trustee Frank Mrvan hosts Art in the Park this summer at Wicker Park. He started the program in 2007 to provide children of all ages with an artistic outlet in the summer. North Township will provide all materials and supervision for crafts like painting, collages and coloring. Art in the Park takes place at 10 a.m. Tuesdays through July 8 in the breezeway at the park, U.S. 41 and Indianapolis Boulevard. It's free to children of all ages.

SUMMER JOBS | Gary

The Gary Chamber of Commerce seeks job opportunities for high school and college students this summer. Businesses interested in hiring young people can use the chamber to recruit workers. Businesses should give the chamber information on the type of job that will be offered, salary and type of employee needed.

ART CLASSES | Hammond

Children 7 through 17 years old can register for free mixed media art classes at the Hammond YMCA, 7322 Southeastern Ave. The one-hour classes meet Wednesdays for a month. A South Shore Arts Association grant is funding the program.

CHOIR AUDITIONS | NW Ind.

Southlake Children's Choir is holding auditions for membership by appointment through August. Southlake Children's Choir is open to students 7 to 15 years old who live in Lake and Porter counties. Auditions are about 15 minutes long; no experience or preparation is necessary. The choir is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving young musicians from Northwest Indiana and providing them with an exciting musical experience. The choir performs throughout Northwest Indiana.
