A street race April 10 that killed four people hasn't deterred others from driving dangerously in the city, Gary police Cpl. Agnes Roberts said.

"Speed must be in most people's blood," Roberts said. "You watch car races on TV and see commercials about how fast a car can go. It's instilled in people's minds."

Last week, prosecutors charged a young father with speeding. An officer stopped the man and saw the man's 2-year-old son was not properly restrained in a car seat, court records state.

Christopher Godines Sr., 19, of Gary, faces up to three years in prison if convicted of felony neglect of a dependent and misdemeanor reckless driving.

Officer Irving Given was in an unmarked police car near Fifth Avenue and Broadway when he saw a green Chevrolet Caprice and a blue Chevrolet Monte Carlo speeding north on Broadway, court records state.

Givens began following the cars. When the drivers started racing from a signal at Fourth Avenue and Adams Street, he radioed for a marked car to assist, court records state.

Police said the green car, driven by Godines, swerved across three lanes of traffic without signaling.

Givens pulled over Godines and saw the boy wasn't properly restrained in a car seat, the report states.

The charges against Godines come nearly a year after four people were killed and several others were injured when a speeding car crashed into another car and careened into a crowd in the empty lot on Fifth Avenue between Colfax and Hamlin streets. Jaylen Ellis, 6, Benjamin Harper, 31, Conrad Richardson, 28, and William Muldrew, 36, were killed.

Roberts said her department is still working the case to determine what, if any, charges should be filed.

A crash report filed by the department states Christopher Castillo, 21, the driver of the car police said plowed into the crowd, tested positive for opiates and tranquilizers after the crash.
