COOKING CLASSES | Lake Station

Simple, yet delicious, recipes will be demonstrated and taste tested at 1 p.m. March 17 and 31 at the Lake County Public Library's Lake Station branch, 2007 Central Ave. In addition, other recipes will be provided to enhance your collection with simple, easy, yet tasty meal directions. SWIM INSTRUCTION | Hobart

Weekly swim classes are offered in five-week sessions for all ages at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Times vary depending on the level of instruction or day. Certified water safety instructors teach beginning through advanced swimming, including competitive swimming, lifeguarding, water polo and junior lifeguard classes. Register by today.

TREE PRUNING | Hobart

A free Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop will be held at 10 a.m. March 17 at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Meet in front of the Visitor Center. Lake County Park Department horticulturist Bryan McKay will lead participants to the orchard for a demonstration on the proper pruning techniques for fruit trees.Learn about insect control, sprays and year-round-care for trees. Discuss Kaye Gibbons' "Charms for the Easy Life" at 2 p.m. March 18 at the Lake County Public Library's Hobart branch, 100 N. Main St. Charlie Kate travels around the country with her herb bag as a midwife and healer, even delivering her own daughter, Sophia. But in 1904 her marriage ends, and she and Sophia live alone until her daughter gives birth to Margaret, the narrator.

Girl Scout Troop 89 is collecting women's toiletries and children's diapers for clients of Sojourner Truth House in Gary as the final requirement to earn the "I Live My Faith" religious medal. GET IN SHAPE | Crown Point

Crown Point Parks Department and Pilates Center of NWI offer a six-week Pilates class for adults from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 20 to April 24, at the Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Class will focus on strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility and improving posture. A more intense "Bump" Pilates class, which incorporates the use of an exercise ball and hand weights, will also be offered from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. Cost is $42 for residents and $47 for nonresidents. Bring a traditional yoga mat and/or bath towel. Registration required.

INTRO TO ALZHEIMER'S | Merrillville

Join a free informational and interactive session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. March 21 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30, that will focus on understanding the disease process of progressive dementias such as Alzheimer's disease. This monthly presentation should be attended prior to taking the advanced dementia class. A free monthly informational and interactive session will focus on advanced topics with regard to caring for individuals with progressive dementia from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 21 at the library. Topics will include such things as handling behavior/communication changes, assisting with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, etc.), planning of activities, and addressing difficult transitions (i.e., loss of driving privileges). Co-sponsored with Alzheimer's Services of Northern Indiana, registration will be taken for both classes at the toll-free number.

HEALTHY INDIANA | Hobart

A free presentation to introduce the Healthy Indiana Plan, a new, affordable health insurance program for uninsured adult Hoosiers, will be held at 5:30 p.m. March 25 in the auditorium of St. Mary Medical Center, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave. The program is sponsored by the state and only requires minimal monthly contributions from the participant. It is designed to fill the gap for working Hoosiers 18 to 64 that are not offered health insurance through an employer and find private insurance unaffordable. Attendees will learn about who is eligible, what is covered and what it will cost to participate. Enrollment applications will be available. Use the west tower entrance. LIFEGUARD TRAINING | Hobart

Lifeguard training classes will be held March 22 to April 12 at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Prerequisite testing must be successfully completed in advance by appointment only. Candidates will be taught the skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive two American Red Cross certifications, one for Lifeguard Training and First Aid valid for three years and another for CPR for the Professional Rescuer valid for one year.
