2 men deny dodging federal income taxes
Two men pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that they failed to report income they received from the scandal-plagued Gary Urban Enterprise Association.
Lawrence Meeks Sr., 55, was indicted on five counts of not reporting income he received, as a janitor, from the GUEA between 2000 and 2004. The GUEA was headed by his daughter, Jojuana Meeks.
Gregory L. Hill, 43, was indicted on four counts of not filing tax returns from 2001 to 2004, even though audit records say he earned more than $80,000 two of those years through a groundskeeping company he formed that contracted with the GUEA.
Hill is the longtime boyfriend of Charmaine Pratchett, the former fiscal manager of the GUEA.
Hill and Lawrence Meeks bring to nine the total number of people charged with crimes related to the GUEA. The organization was formed to eliminate blight in inner-city Gary, but was dissolved earlier this year after scandals made it impossible for the nonprofit to raise funding to operate.
Jojuana Meeks, Pratchett and former board members Derrick Earls and Johnnie Wright already have pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $1 million from the organization.
During the last few years of the GUEA's existence, Meeks, Pratchett, Earls and Wright operated without any oversight because the group's board of directors had ceased to meet.
In that same time period, the GUEA bought two buildings through politically connected figures Roosevelt Powell and Willie Harris that led to indictments against those two men, along with Lake County Councilman Will Smith Jr.
Powell, Harris and Smith were all indicted on charges they secretly profited from one or both of the sales after conspiring to fraudulently erase outstanding tax bills. They are pleading not guilty and awaiting trial.
