Calumet Traveling Sams, Indiana Chapter 2 has been named a dynamic 32 rig club, with many members dedicated to volunteerism and to charities that help others. In 2007, the chapter recruited 12 new camping families, a 57 percent increase in membership over the previous year, according to a news release.
All of this proved to be the groundwork that secured the Chapter of the Year Award.
The chapter's charities, which each received a donation, include Jacobs Ladder (which also received a monthly donation to help a young member with a new feeding program), Ronald McDonald House/Riley Hospital (which also received more than 150 pounds of pop tabs that helped fund parental overnight stays and bought personal items and toiletries, videos, books and magazines), Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Lupus Foundation and Toys 4 Tots (which received four huge boxes of unwrapped toys).
Individuals in the chapter also donate their time and give supplies to animal shelters (500 pounds of dog and cat food, cat litter, pet toys, towels and cleaning supplies); more than 500 pounds of food given on two occasions during the year to three different food pantries; Habitat for Humanity projects in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; rebuilding and redecorating a battered women's shelter and homeless shelter; nursing homes, veterans homes, local fire departments, churches and a cell phone collection drive.
All told, the chapter accumulated more than 1,600 hours of volunteer time helping others, according to the release.
